Photography Guidelines

High‑quality photographs bring our CARUNews stories to life. To ensure your photos look their best in print and online, please follow these submission guidelines.

Use the best settings on your digital camera

For magazine‑ready images, always set your digital camera to its highest quality and largest file size. This ensures your photos have the high resolution needed for professional print production.

Sending photos from phones or tablets

If you’re using a cell phone or iPad, select the largest file size when prompted. This simple step helps us receive crisp, clear images that reflect the vibrancy of Caribbean life.

Take time to compose your shot

A well‑composed photo tells a stronger story. Aim for images that are:

  • Clear and sharply focused
  • Visually appealing
  • Natural and action‑oriented rather than posed

Capture real moments, worship, service, fellowship, and youth in action so that readers can feel the heartbeat of the event.

Pay attention to lighting

Good lighting makes all the difference:

  • Know your flash range; photos taken too far away will appear dark.
  • Even outdoors, a flash can help reduce harsh shadows from our bright Caribbean sun.
  • Avoid mirrors, windows, or shiny surfaces in the background to prevent glare.

Include vertical photos

Most contributors send horizontal shots, but vertical photos are also valuable. When covering an event, remember to capture a few strong vertical images.

Add clear captions

Many readers were not present at the event, so captions matter. Include:

  • A brief description of what’s happening
  • The full names and roles of individuals shown (when practical)
  • Correct spelling of all names

Captions help us honour the people and ministries represented.

Credit the photographer

Just as writers receive recognition, photographers should too. Always include the photographer’s full name so proper credit can be given.
